information. Data entry and information
processing workers are responsible to
ensure the smooth and efficient handling
of information in a short span of time.
They enter data into a computer and operate
a variety of office machines, by performing

data or information into a computer
is called data entry. This requires
good typing knowledge and speed. The

Technically speaking, data entry is
the transcription of information from
the original source into a machine-readable
form. There are lots of formats in which
the data can be fed, but the most popular

scanners, and speech recognition process.
As a data entry operator you will be
responsible for setting up reports,
writing letters, mailing labels, and
other text material. As a beginner you
will be in charge of keying headings
on form letters, write addresses on
the face of the envelopes, or preparing
standard forms on computers. As you
gain experience, you are assigned tasks
that require a higher degree of accuracy.

in a typing institute and get a good score
in the examination conducted by them.
Concentrate on your speed, as it the most
important requirement. Since this requires
sitting for long periods in front of the
computers these workers are susceptible
to repetitive strains, which can be neck
and back injuries, and eyestrain. So to
cope up with these difficulties, many
offices have adopted regularly scheduled
exercise breaks, user-friendly keyboards,
and workstations that allow workers to
stand or sit as they wish while at work.
Make sure your spelling, punctuation,
and grammar skills are above average,
as this is the most important requirement
which you should possess and the employer
is very particular about this. The skills
required here in the use of keyboard,
knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet,
and database management software. Most
of them choose this profession immediately
after their graduation as a full-time
job due to their family responsibilities.
But, this work is great for undergraduates
or college drop-outs too. This work
frequently serves as a steppingstone
to higher paying jobs with increased

data entry operators in huge numbers.
Government agencies usually have training
programs to help administrative employees
upgrade their skills and advance to higher-level
positions. It is common for data entry
and information processing workers to
transfer to other administrative jobs,
such as secretary, administrative assistant,
or statistical clerk, or to be promoted
to a supervisory job in a word processing
or data entry center.
The salary ranges between Rs. 3,000
to Rs. 5,000 per month. Sometimes the
annual salary package for data entry
starts with 45,000 to 85,000. This largely
depends on the education, typing speed,
experience, and of course knowledge.
As you gain experience in this field
you go on to become a supervisor; your
expectation can reach Rs.1, 00,000 to
Rs.2,50,000 per annum. |
